Beyond the Classroom

Want to know more about Studying Away for a semester or summer? Well, you are in the right place.

Here are a few commonly asked questions about Study Away.

What is Study Away exactly?
A program that is here in the U.S. where you can gain academic credit. It is just like Study Abroad, but you’re not leaving the country!

It is a great option for students who do not want to or cannot leave the country. Our study away programs have great opportunities for internships in LA and in Washington D.C., as well as field research options in various U.S. locations for students in the natural sciences.

How much does a Study Away program cost?
A Study Away program for a semester will cost you the same as if you were at Trinity for a fall or spring semester. This means that any institutional / financial aid you’re receiving will also apply for the semester that you are away from Trinity.

With summer study away programs such as the Geosciences Field Camps, students pay the program cost instead of Trinity summer tuition. Federal and institutional aid usually are not applied to these programs.  There is a very small fee (~$75) you pay to Trinity, which is added on your Trinity eBill.

Do Trinity study abroad scholarships also apply to these programs?
No. Your federal and institutional aid still applies for semester programs, but Trinity study abroad scholarships cannot be applied here.

You will need to look for scholarships with the provider or with other TU departments. For example, the Trinity Geosciences Dept. has a Scholarship for Geology Field Camps.

How is this different from transferring in credit or finding a U.S.-based program on my own?
As long as your program is on the Trinity Approved List, you have the opportunity to gain credits on the program, and apply the credits for your major, minor and pathways. All courses will need to be pre-approved before your semester away, so reach out to your study abroad advisor for these instructions.

Finding a U.S. based program on your own would require you to withdraw from Trinity for a semester and then submit your credits for approval upon your return. We cannot guarantee approval of these credits until confirmed by the Registrar’s Office.
