What is carbon offsetting? Simply put, carbon offsetting is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide and/or other greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere such as for international air travel. As the most visible office within the CIE, Study Abroad is at the core of the Center’s efforts to internationalize campus in assisting students and also faculty in going abroad. Greenhouse gas emissions produced from institution-based travel are not an insignificant portion of the overall University’s emissions, and the CIE pledges to mitigate its direct emissions by offsetting any emissions produced from travel. Will you consider doing the same?  If so, here is a short list of organizations who accept donations from travelers wishing to offset their emissions from international travel.

If you are not sure what your carbon footprint is from air travel, you can use a carbon offset calculator.

What is carbon onsetting? You may have heard about carbon offsetting before now, but what is less common is carbon onsetting. Carbon onsetting is a more transformative, educational opportunity where instead of paying off emissions through donations, you pay it forward by volunteering. Volunteer opportunities would likely involve planting trees, working in a community garden, cleaning up parks and working with local conservation groups. Here are a few opportunities at Trinity and in San Antonio for you to volunteer.
