Archaeological field experience is imperative for Trinity students who are considering graduate school or a career in archaeology. Therefore, Classical Studies and Anthropology & Sociology want to encourage their participation in archaeological field schools.

Step 1: Classics major or an Anthropology/ Sociology major are required to contact either Dr. Mathews or Dr. Hirschfeld about the possibility of participating in a summer archaeological field school abroad in early fall.

Step 2: Dr. Hirschfeld and/or Dr. Mathews will meet with students (depending on the area of the world they are interested in conducting fieldwork) to identify a pedagogically-sound field school based on the students’ geographical, cultural, or skill-based interests.

Step 3: Andre Martinez in Study Abroad will then be contacted with their recommendation(s). He would focus on determining if the program met Trinity’s safety standards and transfer credit protocols. He will also figure out the cost to the student, which will vary according to the project’s rate and the number of credits awarded.  Andre will then contact Drs. Herschfeld and Mathews as well as the students with his findings.

Step 4: Drs. Herschfeld & Mathews will assist the students in the application process, including providing letters of reference as needed.  The Study Abroad Office will also work with the student(s) on their application and paperwork for credit transfer.
